The 2016 Sweethearts and Patriots Gala will benefit the USO of Metropolitan Washington-Baltimore. USO-Metro is the largest center chartered by USO with ten locations and a “deployable” Mobile USO that provide signature USO services to the nearly 300,000 military members and their families living in the region and the 150,000 who travel through our local airports. USO-Metro is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization chartered by Congress, and dedicated to “serving those who serve, and their families” in Washington D.C., Maryland and Northern Virginia. USO-Metro provides programs and services for active duty troops and their families at area military hospitals, six USO Centers, four USO airport lounges and a Mobile USO. Signature programs and services include holiday programs like Turkeys for Troops and Project USO Elf, emergency housing and food assistance, and caring for our wounded, ill and injured troops and their caregivers.
The 2015 Sweethearts and Patriots Gala raised $23,000 for the Tragedy Assistance Program for Survivors (TAPS). TAPS helps those who are grieving the loss of a loved one who served in the military. The organization started as a group of military families who tragically lost their loved ones in a military plane crash in 1992. The families connected with each other and through the process of rebuilding their lives found comfort in helping one another. Later, in 1994, Bonnie Carroll founded TAPS. After extensive study, she created the organization using best practices found in peer-based support programs. Today, TAPS offers many resources to survivors, including counseling services and opportunities to connect with others. TAPS also holds a variety of events each year and programs designed to assist with the healing process after losing a loved one. To learn more, please visit www.taps.org.
In 2014, the inaugural year, Sweethearts and Patriots raised $5000 for Luke’s Wings. Luke’s Wings is a 501(c)3 dedicated to the support of service members who have been wounded in battle. Recognizing the immediate need for families to be with their loved ones at such a difficult time, Luke’s Wings provides families with the means to visit during the service member’s hospitalization and rehabilitation.
